چکیده

This paper constitutes a progress rersort on the develol•ment of an ultrasonic instrument for detecting microstructure. The principle of operation of the device (designated by the term "ultrasonic microscope") is as follows: The specimen is imbedded in a liquid, which closely matches it in acoustic impedance, and is irradiated with sho•t pulses of highdreqnency hound. Some of the ultrasonic energy ia absorbed in the sl-Jecimen and the remainder leaves it and excites a small thermoelectric probe placed immediately adjacent to the region being investigated. As the specimen, which is between the sound source and the 0robe, is moved in a direction normal to the direction of sound propagation, a vaxying acoustic signal will be detected by the probe. This is a consequence of the fact that the amonnt of acoustic energy absorbed by the specimen in the portion immediately adjacent to the probe is determined by the structure of that part of the specimen. Preliminary experimental results obtained with such a "microscope" operating at a frequency of 1• mc/sec are presented.

Synthesis and Characteristics of Graft Copolymers of Poly(butyl Acrylate) and Cellulose Fiber with Ultrasonic Processing as a Material for Oil Absorption

A series of materials used for oil absorption based on cellulose fiber grafted with butyl acrylate (BuAc) have been prepared by radical polymerization under ultrasonic waves processing. Effects of ultrasonic dose for the maximum graft yield were considered. The dependency of optimum conditions for oil absorption rate on parameters such as ultrasonic processing time and ultrasonic power were als...

Radiation damage of polymers in ultrasonic fields

Radiation damage has always been a topic of great interest in various fields of sciences. In this work, an attempt is made to probe into the effect of subthreshold ultrasonic waves on the radiation damage created by irradiation of deuterons in polymer samples wherein the polymer samples act as model systems. Two equal volumes of radiation damage were produced in a single polymer sample wherein ...

A STUDY OF ULTRASONIC ABSORPTION OF SOME AMINO ACIDS AND THEIR MIXTURES AT PHYSIOLOGICAL pH

In this paper, the ultrasonic absorption of amino acids was measured using a small cylindrical resonator at physiological pH and 25°C and a concentration of 0.1. M. The absorption of mixtures of some amino acids was also measured. In the case of cysteine-histidine, the absorption of mixtures is much larger (more than twice) than the summation of absorption of the individual amino acid. This...

Understanding of Ultrasonic Assisted Machining with Diamond Grinding Tool

In this work, machining test was carried out in various machining conditions using ultrasonic vibration capable CNC machine. For work material, alumina ceramic (Al2O3) was used while for tool material diamond electroplated grinding wheel was used. To evaluate ultrasonic vibration effect, grinding test was performed with and without ultrasonic vibration in same machining condition. In ultrasonic...

The ultrasonic/shear-force microscope: Integrating ultrasonic sensing into a near-field scanning optical microscope

An ultrasonic transducer is incorporated into a near-field scanning optical microscope NSOM to augment its versatility to characterize the properties of layers adsorbed to a sample’s surface. Working under typical NSOM operation conditions, the ultrasonic transducer—attached underneath the sample—demonstrates sufficient sensitivity to monitor the waves generated by the tapered NSOM probe that o...
